Who has not at least once drooled over Zac Efron, the blue-eyed teenage heartthrob or Beyonce the lady with her mind in her mouth?
Who could not be impressed with the brilliance that Bill Clinton has reflected in his political career or Serena Williams does in her games?
In my little circle of friends, everyone does. Although they are the masters of their field, one thing that brings them under one roof is the talks of their fitness. They have been acing their fields for years and influencing their fans to move towards a healthier and fitter future. I have been reading about them and a lot more celebrities for a while now and have found one thing that is really interesting and common between them. The fact that they are all VEGANS. Yeah, they are all the plant-eaters. Some since time immemorial and a few have transformed in the recent past. No matter what the world says being vegan is the new trend. Not actually, “New” new but yes, #beingvegan is trending these days.
The Personal Story
I turned vegan a decade back and have felt some noted changes in me as a person. It is not that I just started feeling healthier, but also I have been a better person. More compassionate, positive and less arrogant. Some of the minor ailments that I had been suffering since childhood have no traces now.
And turning vegan has not only made me fitter but then it is a tried and tested beauty treatment. Maybe you love to hog over your favourite meatball pizza a lot and find it difficult to turn vegan at once, but giving a shot won’t harm.
Trust me it is going to do wonders…!!!
Why Turn Vegan? The Fact Check
Well, with my personal experience turning vegans makes you fitter, positive and much active. Rest have a quick look at some of the interesting facts of turning vegan that can be one of the cornerstones you would consider before you judge the people taking the big step.
1. Almost 80% of the food poisoning cases registered around the world are due to infected meat. Not just food poisoning there are a lot more diseases that spread due to infected meat. Some of these diseases have even claimed a lot of lives around the world.
2. The industries dedicated to the research of vegan diets and its benefits state, people following a vegan diet have lower risks of colon or prostate cancer, lower blood cholesterol, lower blood pressure, etc. Since the vegan food is full of fibre and other health supplements, the diseases that are centred around fat intake have lower chances of infecting the one practising veganism.
3. By turning vegan, you are contributing to saving the Earth (Earth Day was a few days back, let’s promise to move towards a healthier planet). Must be thinking how is that even possible? Well, most forest areas are being cleared so that the crops to feed meat-based diets are produced. Thus cut down the meat-intake and be a part of saving the planet campaign.
4. Vegan food definitely cuts the unnecessary fat content, that makes it healthier. Cutting down the meat fat from your diet is one thing that none of us can do. We may opt for healthier options but cutting down on it is impossible. So, turning vegan just helps you to lower the fat content in your regular diet too.
5. Don’t believe me, fine. Let the numbers do the talking. The UK saw almost 350% increase in the number of vegans in the last decade.
Woah…that’s a lot, actually.

7 Little Know Facts Why Being Vegan Is the New Trend
Fact#1: It Turns You to Be More Compassionate
This comes straight from our all-time favourite James Cromwell. In an interview he stated
“What is magnificent about human is when they decide to turn and stand. If they respond with non-violence with the principle and hold their ground, they are really magnificent.”
The Babe actor turned vegan after the movie was filmed. With a very clear stand for the compassion towards the fellow living beings the actor is quite vocal about his decision to be vegan and is found compelling fans to take the same road. Since I turned vegan just a few years back I can easily relate to the fact that he addressed here. Turning vegan makes you a superhuman. A super compassionate human actually.
When I turned vegan, I realized there were a few changes in me that made me really strong and have an amiable look at nature around. It turned me to a calmer self, that made me more vocal about the good things instead of the bad things around. I could connect with the pain and the sufferings of the animals slaughtered to feed our hunger. Turning vegan is not a sacrifice that we make, but we just are a little kind to the other living beings around.
Fact#2: It Teaches You to Live in Harmony
The world is a small family and we need to live harmoniously. Not just with the fellow human beings but with the animals too. Turning vegan was a tough call to make. But I turned vegan and survived the decision for almost a decade now. Living in a world where we are surviving the endangered lists and researching on making the world a better place to live for most of the animals, we also need to take care of the ones that have survived the long harsh terms. It is not just for personal benefits but for the good of the world that one could turn vegan and contribute. We don’t want our herds and the livestock to be a part of the endangered species.
Think Twice…We could not see a few animals from the last decade we don’t want our kids identifying the major biosphere from just the books and the pictures.
The “Cheers” sitcom’s bartender Woody Harrelson once quoted “Really my message is very simple. It is a message of compassion. In this world that is spinning madly out of control, we have to realize we’re all related. We have to try to live harmoniously” when asked about his transformation to being vegan.
Fact#3: It Gives You Health Benefits
“Nothing’s changed my life more. I feel better about myself as a person, being conscious and responsible for my actions and I lost weight and my skin cleared up and I got bright eyes and I just became stronger and healthier and happier. Can’t think of anything better in the world to be a vegan.”
The “Crush” actress says she battled severe asthma, insomnia, acne, and constipation before turning vegan. I may not be the right person to ask to turn vegan but who better than her? Being vegan I noticed a few changes in my health too. I have developed better stamina to do my work, and the minor health issues that I had been dealing for long did not knock in again after a time. Definitely, there are people who talk about vegan being destroying the flora fauna, but then health first. This argument of flora & fauna and the biodiversity being destroyed is a continuous battle that would never come to an end. For a better, healthier life make sure that you make moves that not only adds to the good vibes you have been searching for but also lets other kids of mother nature live happily.
Most athletes have a larger portion of their diet vegetarian because they know a healthier them would be the stronger them.
Fact#4: It Keeps You Protected from Diseases
“When people ask me why I don’t eat meat or any other animal products, I say, because they are unhealthy, and they are the product of a violent and inhumane industry. Chickens, cows and pigs in factory farms spend their whole lives in filthy, cramped conditions only to die a prolonged and painful death. Their bodies are then turned to into food products to contribute to heart disease and cancer. To eat that is to eat poison.”
Our very own “Lonesome Jim” is vegan too. Yeah, I was surprised too. I am actually amazed, how each of the hot personalities I have been drooling over since my childhood are vegans. the guy has a very strong point to make and he affirms that being vegan keeps a lot of diseases at bay from you. I know a lot of you may be thinking it is all stories, initially, I felt the same. The thought and the perception changed when I turned vegan. I am definitely not a vegan, vegan but I am no less.
Yeah, cheat diets are allowed but since a decade I don’t remember if I had ditched being vegan.
Fact#5: It Could Just Be a Moral Choice
“It’s not a requirement to eat animals, we just choose to do it, so it becomes a moral choice and one that is having a huge impact on the planet, using up resources and destroying the biosphere.”
The person behind the “Titanic” is vegan. See being vegan can get you the ideas that are yet to happen.! (Wink)
Well, on a serious note the film-maker and environmentalist is vegan. A vegan environmentalist is an unsaid fact. But beyond this, Cameron has been quite vocal about his choice of diet and the impacts that the diet has on him. In one of his interviews he says, it is the human consciousness that is 5 years emotionally older and after an age, you have an aversion from a few things that you may have liked in the past or loved. He is working in the direction of protecting the environment and biodiversity. He says the decision was more about morality than moving to a healthy choice. You need to decide the right and the wrong. And Mr Cameron has made his choice very clear back in 2012.
Fact#6: It Makes You Feel Lighter and Better
“And I felt better, so I continued with it. Now, for many people, that choice is connected to environmental ethics and health issues and all that stuff, but I just wanted to try it to see what it was like. In a visceral way, I felt better, so I’ve continued with it and I’m likely to continue it for the rest of my life.”
Turning vegetarian is not just cutting meat from your diet but leaving some space for some positivity in your schedule too. Obviously, it takes longer to digest the meat that you intake as compared to the vegan food that you enjoy. This definitely makes you feel lighter and better throughout the day and makes it easier for you to deal with the things. Turning vegan cuts on the heavy fats that you have been taking in and thus adds to the workout that you have been procrastinating for long. It was back then when he had the congress hearing on climate change and the cosponsored hearing on toxic wastes. The respected politician officially announced being vegan in 2013.

Venus Williams is often found to be eating the healthier yet the tastier versions of the daily food as compared to any other athlete. Thus, breaking the norm, vegan food does not give you strength. Additional Fact# 8: It Costs Less
As like other diets, the cost of a vegan diet totally depends upon how the person decides to plan, shop, and then eat. One of the rumours about the vegan diet is that it is far expensive than an average American diet. Up-to some extent it’s true, you can add up quickly if you buy vegan alternatives, such as non-diary cheese and imitation meat products. And like any other diet in the world, you can waste a ton of money in going out to eat, especially at restaurants who are famous for serving a vegan diet. But eating a vegan diet at home requires far less budget than a non-vegan diet. All you need to do is just a little planning, shopping, and cooking in bulk.
Wrapping It Up…
It is not just these celebrities who have been promoting veganism for so long. There are a lot more people on the list who have been doing their bit towards a healthier and stronger planet. Being a big fan of dairy products, I have struggled in my initial days while dealing with the cravings. But gradually things started turning to be easier and interesting.
I won’t force you to change your dietary choices, but giving the change a shot won’t matter. I am highly impressed with the way my eating habits have transformed me over the year.
And the Experts Say…
It is really amazing to know that the benefits associated with plant-based diets are pretty significant. According to a survey done in 2009, vegan diet followers tend to have lower body fats, lower blood pressure, and lower cholesterol as well. And along with that, it has also reported that vegan people also consume more fibre, folate, vitamin C, vitamin E, potassium and magnesium. The results from the same survey have shown that plant-based diets have been used as interventions to decrease body fat level and cardiovascular risks.
Another survey has shown that people who follow plant-based diets lost an additional 6kgs compared to control non-vegan group and had also a significant improvement in blood lipids. There was also an improvement in insulin sensitivity and decrements in the risk of developing type 2 based diseases. Many cardiac experts suggest that diabetics should follow a vegan diet. It exhibits great improvements in overall sugar level, glucose level, and can even reduce diabetic medications. This is because most of the vegan diets have fibre intake which makes a significant impact on a glycemic response as well as weight control.
