The road to working out and getting fit is not an easy one. You are going to be running across many different difficulties and challenges that you will have to overcome. At times, you might even feel like giving up.
I always say it is important to surround yourself with a good group of people who are going to keep you motivated and hold you accountable. You might feel like quitting at times, but they are going to give you that push that you need.
One of the biggest issues is finding that group of people who can support you. Fortunately, due to the Internet, you are only a few clicks away from not only getting all of your fitness questions answered, but also finding a support group that is going to help you.
Today, I’m going to be talking about Reddit and some of the best fitness subreddits out there for you to follow and participate in.
What is Reddit?
Reddit is a massive website that is filled with many small communities that interact with each other on “subreddits”.
If you are new to Reddit, think of a subreddit as a forum dedicated to one particular topic.
Often these subreddits can be super specific, or more broad, but there's an every growing list to choose from.
Reddit is a great way for you to find like-minded people who are passionate about fitness. Now that you have an understanding of Reddit, it’s now time to introduce you to some of the best fitness subreddits that I like to read every day.
From getting your questions answered about a workout program, to getting the motivation that you need, you can find it on these fitness subreddits.
1. r/Fitness For Men and r/xxfitness For Women (Best for Overall Fitness Topics)
I have to say that these are definitely the best fitness subreddits out there if you are looking to have any of your fitness-related questions answered or if you simply just want to sit down and talk fitness with other people.
While I say r/Fitness is great for men, it is inclusive for everyone.
You will find it mostly being used by men however and as a result, some women might feel uncomfortable, especially because of how some people act on the internet.
If you are a female or a gender non-binary person, I’d recommend taking a look at r/xxfitness. It follows the same idea as r/Fitness, but it is strictly moderated to be a safe space for those who want to get into fitness without worrying about what other people have to say.
I think this is one of the best fitness subreddits out there because it strongly prioritizes inclusion and a sense of community. Males are still allowed to visit and post on this subreddit, however from what I have noticed, most seem to stay on r/Fitness.
The thing I liked most about these subreddits was the themes that they had going. While you can ask simple questions every day on the subreddit in the right area, you’ll notice that each day does have a theme.
For example, on r/Fitness, Mondays are called Moronic Monday and it’s your time to ask questions that you think are stupid without any judgment. I love that they have this as it allows people to speak out without fear of judgment. It’s little things like that that make these some of the best fitness subreddits out there.
2. r/LoseIt (Best For Losing Weight)
If you are going on a fitness journey with the goal of losing weight, then r/LoseIt is going to be one of the best fitness subreddits out there for you.
It is full of people who are also motivated to lose that extra bit of fat and reach a new level of health in their lives.
On r/LoseIt, you are going to find tons of people asking questions surrounding weight loss.
There is no question that is too stupid either so don’t be afraid to ask about what is on your mind. I’ve seen people post about weight loss tips, to people asking why they aren’t getting the results that they are looking for.
The subreddit also has a challenge where you can join a team and compete against other people. They’ve taken the weight loss goal and found a way to make it a fun competition amongst other Redditors. The final thing in this subreddit that I love is that they have people posting about their progress and then being congratulated and motivated by others.
You might not view losing 5lbs as that big of a deal, but the people on this subreddit are going to make you feel like a million bucks and that is why I consider it to be one of the best fitness subreddits out there. With how motivational and friendly it is, you are sure to fit in and get the support that you need to get healthy.
3. r/EatCheapAndHealthy (Best for Cheap, Healthy Meal Inspirations)
I’ve seen tons of diet plans posted online and noticed the same problem with a lot of them. If you don’t make a lot of money, there is no way that you are going to be able to afford all of the food and supplements they say you need.
I was so happy when I saw r/EatCheapAndHealthy as it was all about creating healthy meal plans that are affordable for people and it is definitely one of the best fitness subreddits out there for meal planning.
You can ask questions on how to make simple veggies taste delicious, or you can post some of your favorite recipes to give people an idea of what they can make at home.
I’ve come across a few recipes on here that I’ve tried out myself and I was amazed at how delicious they were. With this subreddit, there is no reason for having boring vegetables that you are going to hate. If you are looking for a way to eat healthy at an affordable price, this is going to be one of the best fitness subreddits out there for you.
4. r/C25K (Couch To 5k: Best For Running Beginners)
The Couch to 5K is all about getting people out of their sedentary lifestyles and into something more active at a gradual pace - and we have a great article all about it for you to check out too!
This is one of the best fitness subreddits because the Couch to 5K cardio plan is perfect for those who hate cardio or need an easy way to get into working out.
Aside from the fact that the plan itself is super easy to get into, there's plenty of like-minded fitness beginners on this subreddit who are in the same situation of needing an easy cardio workout program.
r/C25K can help you learn more about this beginner workout plan, meet likeminded cardio newbies, figure out what you need to get into cardio, and find the right version of Couch to 5K that meets your needs and wants.
5. r/Bodybuilding (Everything About Bodybuilding)
r/Bodybuilding is not like the other typical fitness subreddits on this list because it is also an area where people talk about professional bodybuilders.
That being said, this is one of the best fitness subreddits if you are looking to introduce yourself into the world of bodybuilding and want to work out and better yourself.
From my experiences, the people on this subreddit are extremely welcoming and will encourage you to be the best you can be, no matter your starting point.
You are going to find discussions about the strict dieting that bodybuilders have to go through, along with the intense workout sessions.
You’ll also find people discussing tanning and posing as there are plenty of people who are prepping for contests in this subreddit. If you are interested in the world of bodybuilding, this is definitely going to be the best fitness subreddit out there for you.
6. r/BodyweightFitness (For Bodyweight Exercises)
Not everyone has the money to get a gym membership or build a home gym.
It's perfectly fine, because bodyweight exercises are a great alternative.
If you are someone who wants to workout just using bodyweight exercises, r/BodyweightFitness is going to be your new best friend.
There are training guides and plans within the subreddit itself for you to click on and view so you can see what you can do from the comfort of your own home or backyard.
You can also ask any questions regarding bodyweight fitness here, and like the other fitness subreddits on this list, there are no stupid questions.
This is going to be one of the best fitness subreddits out there if you want to learn more about body weight exercises and what you can do to get fit. The subreddit does not frown upon people who use gym equipment, they just wanted to create a place where people can discuss these types of exercises.
7. r/Stronglifts5x5 (For Stronglifts Workout Program)
If you're familiar with Starting Strength, then Stronglifts 5x5 will be very familiar to you.
Considered one of the premier beginner strength training programs, Stronglifts 5x5 and the r/Stronglifts5x5 are two resources any prospective lifter should check out.
You can find all of the information you'll need on the program itself, FAQs from other lifters, additional training resources to compliment Stronglifts 5x5, and just about everything and anything that goes along with the program.
The only thing I wished it had was an official strength training book so I could add it to our best strength training books list!
8. r/ProgressPics (For Motivation)
As you'd expect, r/ProgressPics is a great subreddit to post your fitness journey progress pics.
It might be hard at the beginning to want to post something as intimate as your journey in weight loss, weight gain, or muscle building, but it's a perfect subreddit to gain some motivation seeing others progress.
Not only that, but I'd argue it's one of the most underrated aspects of fitness. Seeing the difference can change your perspective.
Helping, and being helped, by others on a similar healthy living journey with words of encouragement and advice from progress pics can be the world of difference you never knew you needed.
9. r/AdvancedFitness (For Advanced Lifters and Fitness Information)
I'd consider myself something of a nerd, but even I'm overwhelmed by a lot of the information out there on fitness, body mechanics, nutrition, and the intricacies of the active lifestyle.
For those reasons, I'd recommend r/AdvancedFitness for the people that are in the same boat as me, or need a community with a strong understanding of these subjects and need fellow fitness enthusiasts to discuss stuff like metabolic resistance training.
A lot of this goes over my head at times, and I like to think I have a pretty strong grasp on fitness, but this fitness subreddit might be right up your alley.
Furthermore, it's also just a very interesting subreddit full of cool topics that's fun to learn about for educational purposes.
10. r/Nutrition (For Overall Nutrition Knowledge)
Much like r/EatCheapAndHealthy, and to a mroe broad sense r/Fitness, r/xxfitness, and r/LoseIt, there's a major focus on nutrition as a topic source for fitness subreddits.
r/Nutrition is the all encompassing subreddit that focuses on the broad swath of topics that relate to nutrition.
Anything and everything from weight loss, gluten-free living, best natural foods for muscle building, meal-prepping, etc. can be found on r/Nutrition so it's a great source of knowledge if you know what you're looking for.
Even then, if you feel overwhelmed by the nutrition aspect of fitness, it's useful to start brushing up on your knowledge.
In my opinion, these are the best fitness subreddits out there and you should definitely check a few of them out. Reddit can be full of toxic people at times, but I find these subreddits are full of people who are encouraging and friendly.
Even if you are a little nervous to talk about your own progress or ask questions, you can still learn a lot from other people just by searching around. There are plenty of other fitness subreddits out there for you to check out and if you find one, feel free to let me know.
