Sleep is important, and I make sure that I get at least eight hours of it per day if possible.
I love working out and going to the gym, and if I’m not fully energized, not only am I going to lack the motivation to get up and get there, but I’m also going to lack the energy.
I’m not going to sit here and talk about why you need sleep as I’ve already talked a little bit about that in another article and I’m sure I’m also going to cover it more in the future.
That being said, I do want to let you know some of the issues that can arise if you find yourself staying up way too late and only getting a few hours of sleep. These problems can include:
There are plenty more problems that can arise if you aren’t getting sleep, but I wanted to cover the main ones that are attached to working out and getting yourself to the gym.
Now I do want to mention that while some people make the mistake of not going to bed early, there are also those who toss and turn in bed all night unable to fall asleep.
This is one of the worst situations to find yourself in as you are putting yourself in a position to get your 8 hours and do well, but your body simply isn’t letting you fall asleep.
If you find this happening to you, you might look for a solution in the form of sleeping supplements to help relax your body and get the sleep that you need each and every night.
What are Sleep Supplements?
When you hear the term sleep supplements, you might be thinking of sleeping pills, heavy dosages, and prescribed medication to help get the job done.
You’re partially right in your thinking however, sleep supplements are different from pills in the fact that they are over the counter and not as intense.
Therefore sleep supplements are a less intensive way to solve your sleep problems and are a good middle ground if you are struggling to sleep. If you still struggle after taking them, it is a sign you might need something like a prescription to help you out.
How Do Sleep Supplements Work?
One of the best things about sleep supplements is that they mainly use natural ingredients that have been shown to aid in making the body drowsy.
You can expect to find herbal ingredients in these supplements such as valerian root or chamomile.
These have been shown to decrease anxiety and allow you to relax in general, therefore making falling asleep that much easier for you.
Are They Safe?
Whenever I am talking about a supplement I want to ensure that it is safe for you to take and that you aren’t going to get any nasty side effects or health problems. That is why I feel it is important to make a list of some of the best sleep supplements out there.
From doing my own research on sleep supplements, I was able to find that there isn’t much regulation when it comes to what can be put on the shelves. Therefore, you can be taking a risk every time you go to the store and buy a set of sleep supplements.
You always want to ensure that you are getting the best sleep supplements possible. That being said, while it can be a little daunting, just remember that almost all of these sleep supplements contain natural ingredients to get the job done.
I decided to sit down and come up with a list of some of the best sleep supplements needed to give you that full night’s rest that you are looking for. From my personal experiences with them, I did not encounter any harmful side effects or issues.
I fully back these products and would say if you are looking for the best sleep supplements, I would recommend choosing something from this list.
Best Sleep Supplements
#1. Beyond Raw Anabolic Sleep - Best Overall
I touched on some of the important ingredients in the best sleep supplements earlier, but I didn’t mention all of them.
Not only does Beyond Raw Anabolic Sleep contain melatonin, but it also contains ashwagandha.
The ashwagandha plant can be extracted and used in sleep supplements by promoting blood sugar control and stress reduction making it highly effective for a good night's rest.
When I used the pills, I was quite happy with how they worked and found that I was able to sleep much easier than I ever had in the past. I’m not someone who really suffers from sleep disorders, but I definitely did notice the effect that this had on my body when I took it.
The final ingredient I want to talk about in this supplement is palmetic acid. It once again produces a calming effect that will lower your overall stress and help you fall asleep that much quicker.
Overall, I have to say this is one of the best sleep supplements out there and it is definitely on the top of my list for effectiveness.
#2. Brickhouse Dreamzzz Sleep Aide - Best for Bulk Buying
Brickhouse Nutrition's Dreamzzz Sleep Aide is a powerful ally for the sleep deprived because of the extensive list of ingredients.
Within these capsules, you'll find GABA, L-Theanine, passionflower, 5-HTP, and of course, melatonin, among many more.
This means you are going to be getting a product that contains the essentials for great sleep, is easy to take, and will produce results.
I definitely think this is one of the best sleep supplements out there if you are trying to get a well-rounded sleep aide that truly works. When it came to using them, I followed the instructions and ate a melatonin capsule about 30 minutes before I wanted to fall asleep.
Once that 30-minute timer hit, I noticed that I was ready for bed and was able to sleep away right through the night. It's also worth noting that buying it larger packs was a welcome addition if you want to stock up for prolonged periods.
#3. Peptiva Clinically Validated Probiotics + Sleep Support - Best with Probiotic Benefits
Sleep isn’t just about getting the recovery and rest that you need for the next day.
I’m sure you’ve come across the term "gut biome," which is just the scientific term for your gut health. Peptiva provides help in regulating this area of your body.
Why does this matter? Well, a healthy gut has more to do with than simple digestion. Sleeping well comes from the body's ability to absorb nutrients and relax.
You'll see this work on your sleep with melatonin and valerian root, but also form their very own probiotic matrix.
This is what makes it the best sleep supplement for someone who is looking to get more health benefits than better rest.
Using this supplement, I was quite impressed with how it worked for my gastrointestinal health. Improving my gut biome helped invigorate my health overall, and for those that have dietary restrictions, the capsules are vegetarian-friendly as well for an added bonus.
#4. Olly Sleep Melatonin Gummies - Best Tasting
Now I understand that for some people they not only want the effects of the sleep supplements, but they also want them to be extremely easy to take and use as well.
This is why I put Olly Sleep Melatonin Gummies on the list because it is one of the best sleep supplements when it comes to taste.
If you have a child who is having trouble sleeping but is picky with their food, you could consider giving them one of these.
In terms of ingredients, the Olly Sleep gummies come with elderberry and vitamin C as well, making them effective for fighting off colds and keeping your immune system strong.
When I took the product, I definitely found them tasting quite nice, almost as if I was eating candy. If you are looking for something that tastes good, this is one of the best sleep supplements around.
#5. GNC Pro Performance Zinc Magnesium - Best for Older Adults
As our bodies get older, they start to function in a much less efficient way.
Not only do you slow down and lose muscle mass, but you’ll also find yourself producing and retaining less of the vitamins and minerals that you need.
Research has shown that as you get older, the amount of zinc and magnesium in your body decreases.
If you remember from early, you’ll notice that I said magnesium has a calming effect that can help to reduce stress and anxiety.
GNC looked at this information and decided to make one of the best sleep supplements for older adults. It’s zinc magnesium meaning they are going to be getting the mineral that they need.
Because of this, GNC's supplement can be taken at any point in the day to help regulate and control the magnesium in your body. You’ll find it also helps to improve your sleep after a few days, and improves anabolic support for workout recovery.
Taking these pills myself, I didn’t notice much of a difference, but that’s solely because my zinc and magnesium levels are at where they need to be. If you are an older adult or have a deficiency in these nutrients, however, this is definitely going to be one of the best sleep supplements out there for you.
#6. Dr. Emil Nutrition 5-HTP Plus - Best with Mood & Stress Support
If you are someone who suffers from a great deal of stress and anxiety, this might be the best sleep supplement for you.
Containing a 5-HTP enhanced super formula, it is going to boost the serotonin in your body which will result in you getting the mood boost that you need.
Because of this, you’re not only going to notice a difference throughout the day in regards to your mood, but you are also going to notice a difference when you decide to get some sleep as well.
The formula doesn’t end there either. With copious amounts of vitamin B6 in the formula, there is going to be a little bit of something for everyone.
The mood-boosting is nice and I did notice my stress levels decrease when I used these supplements. If you are looking for something to help manage your stress levels, this is one of the best sleep supplements out there for you.
#7. Natrol Advanced Sleep Melatonin Supplement - Best Time-Release
Most of the products on this list are there to help you to fall asleep. Natrol on the other hand is there to make sure you stay asleep.
With a much higher dosage of melatonin, Natrol is the best sleep supplement for ensuring that once you fall asleep, you stay asleep till the next morning.
Because of the high dosage however, I recommend that you speak with your doctor first to see if there are going to be any issues.
It definitely is the strongest and best sleep supplement out there for knocking you out for a long period of time, but I can see why people would be a little more nervous taking this supplement when compared to some of the others on the list.
That being said, it is a great high-powered over-the-counter solution for those who wake up often.
Hopefully, you have a better idea about what sleep supplements do and how you can use them to get the good night’s sleep that you have been dreaming of.
Take a look at the sleep supplements that I have recommended here and find out which one suits your lifestyle and problems the most. By taking the best sleep supplements for you, you can ensure that you wake up every morning energized and ready to go.
